@jim_thompson5910

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

why not plug in each x value into each equation and see what outputs you get for instance, focus on just choice A y = |x| + 4 now plug in x = 2 y = |x| + 4 y = |2| + 4 y = 2 + 4 y = 6 we want to get y = 2 since this is in the table but we got y = 6 instead. So choice A is eliminated

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

do the same with the other answer choices. Be sure to test all of the x values

OpenStudy (anonymous):

b=8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Would the responses for a& b and c&d be the same?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jim_thompson5910

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

what do you mean by b = 8? Are we on the same problem?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y = |x| + 4 y = |3| + 4 y = 3 + 4 y = 7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y = |x| + 4 y = |4| + 4 y = 4 + 4 y = 8 y = |x| + 4 y = |5| + 4 y = 5+ 4 y = 9 y = |x| + 4 y = |10| + 4 y = 10+ 4 y = 10

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

I don't know why you plugged x = 3 into choice A when we already eliminated it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I was just doing all of them A is out

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

well once you've eliminated an answer choice, you can move onto another one

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

hopefully you see how I eliminated choice A?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it not option a?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it is not option c either?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

nope not C either

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it is either b or d

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I would go with b

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

test B with one x value in the table

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it is the same answer for a also

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so B is out too

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it is d

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can you help me with this? Write the equation that is the translation of y=|x| left 9 units and up 11 units. y=|x - 11| - 9 y= |x+9| + 11 y= |x - 9| +11 y= |x+11| - 9 @jim_thompson5910

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

when you shift 9 units left, you replace x with x+9 shifting 11 units up means you tack a `+11` on the end

OpenStudy (anonymous):

b or c?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

when you shift 9 units left, you replace x with x+9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

B
