7th grade math! I'll fan and medal! -y/5 = 6 What is the variable y?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The first step here is to get the y variable alone on one side. You need to rearrange the expression.

pooja195 (pooja195):

Start by multiplying both sides by 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

beat me to it pooja

pooja195 (pooja195):

\[\huge~\rm~\frac{ -y }{ 5 }(5)=6 \times 5 \]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So 30?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but you have to mutilpy or divide both sides by -1 to get the y variable alone

pooja195 (pooja195):

Correct and on the other sides the 5's would cancel -y=30 divide both sides by -1 (-y=-1)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wait it's not just -y, it has a negative sign next to the fraction. Not a specific number

pooja195 (pooja195):

You get the same answer either way :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok

pooja195 (pooja195):

So...what did you get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-30

pooja195 (pooja195):

Good y=-30 well done :)
