First, he notes their claim that he is an “outsider” who has come to Birmingham to cause trouble. King did not adopt Shuttlesworth's suggestion until early 1963, but once he did, he treated it as a major campaign. King opens his letter by noting that, while he usually does not answer criticism. After a court order was issued forbidding demonstrations, King, who advocated obedience to law, decided for the first time to break an unjust law. The “Letter” is dated April 16, 1963, and addressed to “My Dear Fellow Clergymen.” Dr. King explains that he has read the recent statement published by clergymen in a Birmingham newspaper, describing Dr. King’s recent activities in the city as “unwise and untimely.”
