Endosymbiosis indicates that modern day eukaryotic cells were actually 2 prokaryotic cells in a relation, and that relation is sumbiosis, meaning they both rely on each other in many ways. And it is the same way how mitochondria ended up in our modern day eukaryotic cells. The larger anaerobic cells swallowed a smaller aerobic cell, but instead of dissolving it, they kept it in there and both gained from it. As time goes on, the smaller cells becomes a part of the larger cells, and when the cell reproduces, their offsprings will have the 2 cells their parents have, thats how mitochrondia got in the modern day eukaryotic cells
