OpenStudy (leahhhmorgannn):

The image below shows two dilated figures with lines AB and CD drawn. If the larger figure was dilated using a scale factor of 3, what relationship do lines AB and CD have? http://prntscr.com/91su8e

OpenStudy (leahhhmorgannn):

Since there's two lines, would they continue to be parallel to each other..? I don't think that really changes much.

Yes AB is parallel to CD and you can use the notation `AB || CD` to say that in a shorthand way.

OpenStudy (leahhhmorgannn):

And they would continue to be parallel even if only the larger figure is dilated by a scale factor of 3?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

The scale factor can be any number you want. AB will still be parallel to CD as long as the scale factor is applied uniformly to each point. The larger figure is the same as the smaller figure, just blown up a bit. Imagine looking at it in terms of 3D perspective. The two figures are identical, but the bigger one is closer to you.

OpenStudy (leahhhmorgannn):

Oh, that's a great explanation. Thank you so much!

you're welcome
