help?

OpenStudy (annah.bee):

OpenStudy (bibby):

for those that don't want to download an rtf find the equations for each table and then find the solution

OpenStudy (bibby):

to start, let's do line 1. we're going to use \(y-y_1=m(x-x_1)\) we need to find m using the slope formula

OpenStudy (annah.bee):

okay so the slope would be -3 for line 1 yes?

OpenStudy (bibby):

correct, then we need an \((x_1,y_1)\) so we just pick either point in the table \(y-9=-3(x-(-1)) \\y-9=-3(x+1) \\y-9=-3x-3 \\y=-3x+6\) do the same thing for line 2, then we can set them equal to each other to find the solution

OpenStudy (annah.bee):

find the slope of line 2?

OpenStudy (bibby):

yeah, then put it into point slope form

OpenStudy (annah.bee):

the slope is 2 iknow that lol

OpenStudy (annah.bee):

and let me do the other part , one moment

OpenStudy (annah.bee):

y-(-5)=2(x-2)

OpenStudy (annah.bee):

yeah?

OpenStudy (bibby):

I guess it's not that necessary to do point slope form cause you can just find the y intercept (the place where x=0) by adding 2 to the first point close \(y-5=2(x-2)\)

OpenStudy (annah.bee):

ya so now i solve that?

OpenStudy (bibby):

yeah

OpenStudy (annah.bee):

ok i got y=2x-6 therefore the y intercept is -6... yea?

OpenStudy (bibby):

the y intercept should be 1, let me see what happened \(y-5=2(x-2) \\y-5=2x-4 \\y=2x-4+5 \\y=2x+1\)

OpenStudy (bibby):

so we want the solution to the following equations \(y=-3x+6,\\ y=2x+1\) do you know how to do that?

OpenStudy (annah.bee):

ill explain hoe im got what i did y-(-5)=2(x-2) y+5=2x-1 -5 -5 ________________ y=2x-6

OpenStudy (bibby):

I'm no hoe : (

OpenStudy (annah.bee):

how****

OpenStudy (annah.bee):

im sorry lmao

OpenStudy (bibby):

hahaha I said 5 btw, not -5 we if the point on the table was (2,-5) then your equation would be right

OpenStudy (annah.bee):

so my equation is wrong?

OpenStudy (bibby):

yeah. \(y-y_1=m(x-x_1)\\(x_1,y_1)=(2,5)\\m=2\) alternatively you can try it with x1,y1=(-1,-1)

OpenStudy (annah.bee):

ugh i hate math this is so confusing.. thank you for helping me.... but what is the anser

OpenStudy (annah.bee):

answer*

OpenStudy (bibby):

I already said the equation to line 2 is \(y-5=2(x-2) \\y-5=2x-4 \\y=2x-4+5 \\y=2x+1\) so now we have \(y=2x+1\\y=-3x+6\) can you find the solution to that?

OpenStudy (annah.bee):

would i now substitute?

OpenStudy (bibby):

mhm \(-3x+6=2x+1\) solve for x, replace in one of the original equations to find the y

OpenStudy (annah.bee):

so i did 2x+1 =y therefore x=y-.5 yes?

OpenStudy (bibby):

eh, that's kind of unnecessary, we already have them both in terms of y, so we can just substitute in straight away |dw:1447347508697:dw|
