If 21% of males and 15% of females in a given state play the guitar, what is the probability that a randomly selected subject in the state plays the guitar, given that the subject is male? 0.15 0.21 0.79 0.85

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What do you think?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think the answer is just 21% and that it is not a trick question :p

OpenStudy (jchick):

since 21% of males play the guitar ... then whats the probability that a male play the guitar?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Tbh I thought so too, but I figured it had to be a trick question. The lesson that came with this test didn't cover anything even closely related to this question, so I have no idea.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This is because the answer choices are 0.15, 0.21, 0.85 and 0.79. 0.15 cant be correct because thats the probability of a person playing guitar is female 0.85 cant be correct since 0.85 comes from 1 minus 15%. 0.79 cant be correct since 0.79 comes from 1 minus 21%

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Dang untrick trick questions :p thanks for explaining it guys. Wish I could give both you guys medals.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this is a pretty crappy question but yeah it should just be 21%

OpenStudy (jchick):

21 percent literally mean: 21 out of 100, 21/100

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It was. Well, it was 0.21, but same thing :p

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yep you can always rule out the answers if they are obviously wrong lol!

OpenStudy (jchick):

male and guitar = .21 of the male population female and guitar = .15 of the female population

OpenStudy (jchick):

.21n out of a population of n is just: .21n/n = .21

OpenStudy (jchick):

So yes it is .21

OpenStudy (anonymous):

jchick, i think he understands, he just wasnt sure if it was a trick question or not since the last part was worded poorly.

OpenStudy (jchick):

Yes I agree I just need to always show work.
