WILL MEDAL

OpenStudy (asad786):

Have you ever noticed that it is almost impossible to see the stars in the sky from the city? The view of the stars used to be unobstructed, and despite how faint these stars might have been, people could see all of the Milky Way. From ancient descriptions, we know that the night sky was a glittering, beautiful sight to see. However, now that people have almost unlimited access to electricity, our white light lamps are burning away those heavenly stars. The problem arises because the white light generated by the electric lamps bounces off the atmosphere and creates an optical illusion that prevents people on the Earth’s surface from seeing the light from the stars. The stars are still there, but the light from the surface obscures them. This problem frustrates astronomers, and many have begun to suggest businesses switch to low-pressure sodium lights. These lights have a more yellowish color and are less offensive to starlight. However, we all need to do more. Everyone needs to switch to low-pressure sodium lights because these lights require less energy. Though they are not as bright as white light, they use less electricity. This is good for the planet in general. One day, if we are successful in converting all our lights to low-pressure sodium lamps, we will once again be able to see the night sky as the treasure that it is. 26 The author's purpose in this passage is A. to entertain the reader with impressive descriptions of the ancient sky. B. to describe the quality of light generated by low-pressure sodium lamps. C. to compare and contrast the ancient sky to the sky of the modern world. D. to persuade people of the need to switch to low-pressure sodium lamps.
