OpenStudy (kat_s123):

There's no French section, so I hope this get's answered, but... is it correct to say J'aime regarder les couleurs de la peinture, to say I like to look at the colors of the painting. Google translate doesn't help because it's not grammatically correct.

OpenStudy (xmissalycatx):

J'aime à regarder les couleurs de la peinture.

OpenStudy (vincent-lyon.fr):

Well, first, aimer is a transitive verb, so you would say: J'aime regarder NOT J'aime à regarder. "J'aime à regarder" exists though, but only in poetry-like contexts. Now, if by "painting" you mean a Monet of a Van Gogh, then use the word "tableau". "Peinture" is "paint". So if you have redecorated your flat and you have painted a wall a specific colour, then you might use your sentence. If you are in a museum, use "tableau".
