Do we have to solve with substitution or elimination?
OpenStudy (dayakar):
subtract second from first
OpenStudy (anonymous):
It doesn't say I have been working with both
OpenStudy (anonymous):
So I subtract the -4 from the -2?

No wait.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Let me explain.
OpenStudy (dayakar):
can u do
OpenStudy (anonymous):
For the first one.. when you solve by dividing -2 from both sides... you should get:
\[y = 2x + 1\]
OpenStudy (anonymous):
So now you know what y is... now you have to plug y into the second equation for y...

So you would do \[-4x + (2x + 1) = -1\]
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Well... are there any choices? @Kitty.10
OpenStudy (anonymous):
they would help.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
These are my choices
A (3,1)
B(-1,3)
C(-1,-3)
D(1,3)
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Okay great! So when you solve you should get x = 1!

OpenStudy (anonymous):
Then.... plug x in as 1 and solve for y!
OpenStudy (anonymous):
So I eliminate A?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Yes! :)
OpenStudy (anonymous):
So when you plug in x as 1
You should solve this:
\[-2(1)+y=1\]
OpenStudy (anonymous):
And c since it is negative?

When you do solve that you should get y = 3!
OpenStudy (anonymous):
No!
OpenStudy (anonymous):
x is positive 1...
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Yes I eliminate C
OpenStudy (anonymous):
So if x is 1 and y is 3.. what is the answer?

So the answer is D?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
YES! Great job!
