OpenStudy (rebecca1588):

Which ordered pair is the solution to the system of equations? x+y=-1 x-3y=11 A. (2, −3) B. (−2, 1) C. (5, −2) D. (−6, 5)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay lets work on this together @rebecca1588

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So for the first equation lets solve for x. Just subtract y from each side.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You should get: \[x = -1 - y\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So now we know the equation for x.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now lets plug in that equation into the second equation in place of x... so we should have this now: \[(-1-y) - 3y = 11\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now when we solve that we should get: \[y = -3\]

OpenStudy (rebecca1588):

I think the correct answer is A. (2, −3) would I be right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now that we know what y is lets plug that in for y in the first equation!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

let me see. @rebecca1588

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes! Amazing job!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hope this helped! Have a great day! Also a medal would be much appreciated! Just click best response next to my answer. Thank You! @rebecca1588
