Centripetal force, I would assume. It could be caused by many things. If you attach a ball to a string, and then swing it, the centripetal force is due to the string. If you observe a car driving on a circular road, the friction on the car by the road causes the car to stay on its circular path.
Thank you! But is there a certain force, like tension?
Yes, the tension in the string would cause the centripetal force in the scenario with the ball being swung while attached to the string. But there is no tension for the case with the car on the road -- that centripetal force is due to the friction by the road on the car.
centripetal acceleration might be a catch-all there?
Hehe...
I'm thinking they want a very generic term, but there are many a term that could fit in that blank. I'm thinking there might be a specific answer that they are looking for that is found in the textbook or notes.
Good point, @CShrix . Sometimes these fill-in-the-blank problems are nearly identical to phrases in course material.
Thanks for the help guys! I think I get it now. The teacher wants me to list it based on the situation given. Once again, thank you guys!
Yeah -- one of the reasons why I hate fill in the blank problems/test questions. It provokes learning by memorizing instead of learning by conceptualizing. You're welcome X)
