WILL MEDAL AND FAN!! I am so lost! I need to find frictional force, but all I am giving is the weight, the applied force and that the object is moving at constant velocity! Help! One example I have is that an item weighs 5N, it's applied force is 1N, and it is moving across a horizontal plane at a constant velocity. From that info, I need to find force of friction and the coefficient

See the point is : If you have a rough surface and you move a body sliding over it, a frictional force acts always in a direction that tends to reduce this sliding action. The value of this force is given by mu times normal reaction. mu is coeff of friction.

rvc (rvc):

\(\rm F=\mu \cdot N\)

OpenStudy (aravindg):

Look at your example. The body moves at constant velocity. It means net acceleration is zero or in other words net force acting=0. F_friction=Applied Force

OpenStudy (jellybot23):

Yes, I know all the concepts and equations, but I am not sure how to find friction force being that I am not given the coefficient. Ohhhhh, it is equal?! I was thinking that, but did't think it would be that simple haha

OpenStudy (aravindg):

So 1 N will be the frictional force. Now using formula of Frictional force you can find mu.

OpenStudy (jellybot23):

So then after that I just rearrange the equation to find the coefficient

OpenStudy (aravindg):

Yep its as simple as that :)

OpenStudy (jellybot23):

Wow, awesome! Thank you so so much!!

OpenStudy (aravindg):

yw :)
