If i toss two die what is the probability that the sum will be 6

OpenStudy (nuttyliaczar):

How many possible combinations will give you a sum of 6?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah that is what I'm trying to figure out I know there are 36 combinations of dice roles but out of those how many will give me 6?

OpenStudy (nuttyliaczar):

The first one that works is 1 and 5. What are the rest?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2 4 and 3 3

OpenStudy (nuttyliaczar):

No no each of those pairs is one combination

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait would the answer be 1/6 or 1/12

OpenStudy (nuttyliaczar):

And don't forget to double count. For example, I said 1 and 5. 5 and 1 is another combination, just like 4 and 2.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh so these are the combanations 15 24 33 33 42 51

OpenStudy (nuttyliaczar):

The only exception is 3 and 3 doesn't get counted twice. It's the same number on both dice in each case

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok thank you :)

OpenStudy (nuttyliaczar):

The reason 1 and 5, and 5 and 1 are distinct is because the former suggests your first die was one, and the latter suggests your second was 1

OpenStudy (nuttyliaczar):

So in the end you have 1 5, 2 4, 3 3, 4 2, 5 1

OpenStudy (nuttyliaczar):

You can do the fraction from there
