Where are helpers @wolf1728 and @Baru
Here I am
Q1 votes please
My vote is that Q1 is marked with an incorrect answer.
Q1 incorrect
Q1 incorrect
I did the explanation last time so would one of you guys do the honors this time?
Okay , convert the exponential expressions into standard notation (that is change 10^2 to 100 for example)
Okay what is 4.8 x 10^5 in standard notation?
Hmm, it would help to have kitty here.
Isn't this already in standard notation: 4.8 x 10^5 in standard notation
^ thats scientific notation
Yes, I thought standard notation was expressing numbers in the "ordinary, everyday" manner.
What if a solver just ran this "4.8*10^5 - 9.7 * 10^4=" through the "Wolf" or the Google calulator to see what number it is.
That could work but I always thought answers at Open Study had to be derived in a conventional fashion.
so sorry i d/c
383,000 is about as conventional as it gets.
Couldn't the answer be "B"?
In value, yes. In scientific notation, no.
Well, maybe not because it says "select the answer written in scientific notation".
Let's vote. Do you think 3.83 * 10^5 is correct for #1?
@wolf1728 @baru
Yes
Yes for me.
yep
so the answer to the first should be C
Ergo, C for the first question.
So, I guess we won't select "phone a friend" or "50-50" LOL
xD
(Those are options for "Who Wants to Be A Millionaire")
lmao xD
And we have to decide on the second question (or Question 8) as it says on the test.
We need to save our friends and so forth for when we need them. Yes, I know those game show options. I knew a guy who was on duty to be a "phone a friend." There is nothing spontaneous about phoning a friend. Ever wonder why they are always on the spot after 2 rings?
Vote: Is the OP's marked answer of C correct for the second question?
@wolf1728 @baru
I say incorrect.
me too
Incorrect. @baru 's turn to explain why it is wrong.
lets take advantage of the fact that multiplication is commutative and rearrange the expression as \( (2\times 7) (10^4 \times 10^6)\)
@kittymeow101 can you simplify that?
2 * 7 * 10 ^ (4 + 6)
That is correct
Yes, it is.
yep :)
Three Amigos: All for one and one for all on the answers.
xD
perhaps baru should have mentioned the rule to use when you are multiplying exponents. When multiplying numbers in scientific notation you add the exponents. (which it seems you already knew). And yes ... all for one !!!
yes...and we discussed the same rule on the previous question wolf
sorry baru - I forgot :-(
ty for helping
u r welcome kitty :-)
Yes, you are.
Did @baru forget his manners?
well it's getting VERY late here (6:15 a.m.) so I'll say good night (or good morning actually)
Same time here so I'll be moving on soon.
yes, it seems baru didn't say good-bye. and see you later Directrix :-)
Alrighty, then. I enjoyed the camaraderie.
yes it was quite "camarad-ish"
haha sorry guys nice meeting you all
