your question?
What is the question dear? @Abbs__
Find an equation for the nth term of the arithmetic sequence. -1, 2, 5, 8, ...
This looks like an arithmetic sequence. 3 is added to each term to get the next term. Do you agree with that?
yes
Let's see if this works: Given an arithmetic sequence with the first term a1 and the common difference d, the nth (or general) term is given by an= a1 + (n – 1)d. a1 = -1 d = 3
an= a1 + (n – 1)d an = -1 + d * (n - 1) an = -1 + 3 * ( n- 1) @Abbs__ Would you distribute the 3 over (n - 1) and add -1 to simply this?
In other words, simplify this: -1 + 3 * ( n- 1) That will be the formula for the nth term of the sequence
oh wow you made it so easy ! :)
Can you help me with some more?
What did you get for the answer to the question? I'll check with what I got.
all ihad to do was find an equation
Find the first six terms of the sequence. a1 = -4, an = an-1 + 7
but can you help with that one
What did you get for this when you simplified: -1 + 3 * ( n- 1) = what?
an=-1+3(n-1)
You can do a little more simplifying with this: -1+3(n-1) |dw:1448312315440:dw|
