OpenStudy (ray1998):

2x + 5y = -4 4x - 5y = 22 What is the solution to the above system of equations? A. (3, -2) B. (13/3, - 25/3) C. (-2, 3) D. (3, 2/5) Here is what I did: 2x + 5y = -4 4x - 5y = 22 6x/6 18/6 x = 3 4x - y = 22 4(3) - y = 22 12 12 12 y= 10 What did I do wrong? Please help! Will fan and give medal to anyone who will explain. Thank you in advance!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hold on let me figure it out

OpenStudy (ray1998):

Okay, thank you :) @langenstroer

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

x = 3 is correct. But it seems like you got the wrong value for y.

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

Ah, I see your mistake :)

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

You plugged in x = 3 into 4x - y = 22 the equation they gave you is 4x - \(\huge\bf 5\)y = 22

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

so try this: 4(3) - 5y = 22 Solve for y :)

OpenStudy (ray1998):

Oh, okay! Thank you :) can you show me where my mistake is? @TheSmartOne

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

Already done, look above :P

OpenStudy (ray1998):

Oh, nvm :) I see your comment. Hold on!

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

ok :)

OpenStudy (ray1998):

I'm sorry, I really suck at math and had just gotten the hang of the first part lol could you help me solve for y? Do you add 5y to each side instead of 12? @TheSmartOne

OpenStudy (zenmo):

since, you found the value of x=3. You just plug it into one of the original equations to find y.
