Graph the function rule y= -1/2x + 1/3 I'm stuck on this problem. Can someone explain

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do u agree that the graph will be a straight line? :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok tell this-> is this equation a linear equation? note-> a linear equation is an equation with degree 1 :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Idk

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok this is how u check th degree of an equation-> Step 1-> look at the x and y terms of the equation \[ \cal\Huge\color{red}{y}=-\frac{ 1 }{ 2 }\color{red}x+\frac{ 1 }{ 3 }\] Step 2->look at the exponent of \(\color{red}{x}~and~\color{red}{y}\) in this case the exponent is 1 for both x and y the highest exponent is the degree of equation in this case the highest exponent is 1 so the degree of equation is 1 and whenever the degree of equation is 1 it means its linear and the graph of a linear equations is a straight line :) now we will plot the line :) ok?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm ready to continue

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:) ok now its a line there will be one and only 1 line passing through 2 points agreed?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so if find 2 points which satisfy the equation they will lie on the line and after finding those 2 points say \((x_1,y_1)\) and \((x_2,y_2)\) we will plot them on graph and will join them like this-|dw:1448632224783:dw| and this is how we will get our line ok?
