Why are decomposers important to energy transfer within an ecosystem? I'm looking for examples for my essay, can anyone assist?

OpenStudy (brrandyn):

Decomposers, within an ecosystem, break down both waste and dead matter to recycle and retain nutrients in their environment. They're significant when relating to energy transfer because 10 percent of Σenergy in one trophic level is moved to the next. However, if you factor processes such as respiration, reproduction, non-predatory deaths and defecation, Σenergy is reduced substantially. This low rate of energy transfer between trophic levels make decomposers important because the inorganic material returned is then used as energy for primary consumers.
