Please help, I'll fan & give a medal.

OpenStudy (kmullis6):

What I have so far... Did I do them right? Part A: No, this table doesn't represent a function because -1 and -2 repeat. Part B: f(h) = 3h + 1 f(3) = 3(3) + 1 f(3) = 9 + 1 f(3) = 10 What do I do for C?

OpenStudy (kmullis6):

And also for B, f(h) means the hours that she practiced?

OpenStudy (koikkara):

hey, what is the Question all about ?

OpenStudy (kmullis6):

Sorry, what do you mean? I posted it above @Koikkara

OpenStudy (koikkara):

what you mean is I have to draw a table representing all these hints?

OpenStudy (kmullis6):

Does the question mean multiple or just 1 ordered pair? I can't put a table in the assignment I'm doing.

OpenStudy (koikkara):

@ganeshie8 this user may understand it better than me.

OpenStudy (kmullis6):

@ganeshie8 @wolf1728 @Compassionate @Miracrown @Whitemonsterbunny17 Can any of you guys help me with this?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

your answer for part B, f(3) = 10, is correct. what does f(3)=10 represent here ?

OpenStudy (kmullis6):

means the hours that she practiced?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

the hours that she practiced what ?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

could you explain using more sentences ?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

your teacher likes you more when you use more sentences in your explanation

OpenStudy (kmullis6):

The meaning of f(3) explains how many hours Diana practiced every day. I'm not sure of what else I can say /:

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

that is wrong, f(3) is "not" the hours that Diane practiced everyday

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

f(3) is the "number of matches" that Diane has won when she practiced 3 hours everyday

OpenStudy (kmullis6):

isn't 3 the hours tho? the question only asks to explain f(3)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

f(3) = 10 3 = number of practice hours 10 = number of matches won

OpenStudy (kmullis6):

Oops, sorry I read it wrong.

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

thats okay... so what is your answer for "interpret the meaning of f(3)" ?

OpenStudy (kmullis6):

The meaning of f(3) is how many matches Diana won when she practiced for 3 hours every day.

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

Excellent!

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

now read part C

OpenStudy (kmullis6):

Ok done

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

Part C may throw you off as it has no numbers

OpenStudy (kmullis6):

Yea that's why I'm so confused haha

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

it says Diane practices for "b" hours what does that even mean ?

OpenStudy (kmullis6):

she practiced for 3 hours

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

part C says, " Diane practices tennis for b hours "

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

it is "b" hours not 3, we're done with numbers

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

how can anyone practice for "b" hours

OpenStudy (kmullis6):

Oh ok. Not sure if it has anything to do with this, but doesn't b represent the y-intercept? Is that appilied here or no?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

the letter "b" means different things in different contexts thats the problem we need to learn to deal with in algebra

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

In our present problem, if it helps, you may think of "b hours" to mean "some hours" We don't know how many hours she has practiced yet, we assume it is "b" hours

OpenStudy (kmullis6):

Oh. This section and assignment covers that so I didn't know if it would be used or not

OpenStudy (kmullis6):

ok that makes sense

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

If we assume she practices for "b hours", how many matches do we expect her to win according to the formula in part B ?

OpenStudy (kmullis6):

Um 4? How would I find that i'm not sure

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

may i know how you got 4 ?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

whats the formula from part B ? can you write it here for me please

OpenStudy (kmullis6):

3h + 1 but i figured it was wrong i just dont know how i'd get that answer

OpenStudy (kmullis6):

f(h) = 3h + 1

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

\(3\color{red}{h}+1\) is the number of matches that Diane wins if she practices for \(\color{red}{h}\) hours

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

\(\text{______}\) is the number of matches that Diane wins if she practices for \(\color{red}{b}\) hours

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

fill in the blank

OpenStudy (kmullis6):

10

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

how did u get 10 ?

OpenStudy (kmullis6):

f(h) = 3h + 1 f(3) = 3(3) + 1 f(3) = 9 + 1 f(3) = 10

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

good, now replace \(h\) by \(b\)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

because part C is about practing for \(b\) hours not \(3\) hours

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

f(h) = 3h + 1 f(b) = ?

OpenStudy (kmullis6):

f(10) = 3(10) + 1 f(10) = 30 + 1 f(10) = 31 @ganeshie8 Is this right?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

why are you plugging in 10 ?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

you need to plugin h = b right ?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

f(h) = 3h + 1 f(b) = 3b + 1 thats it.

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

so, if she practices for "b" hours, she will win "3b+1" matches

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

so the ordered pair is (b, 3b+1)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

see if that makes sense

OpenStudy (kmullis6):

Am I plugging in numbers anywhere? Because if so, I'm lost. /:

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

no, we're done.... this is algebra and we're playing with alphabets as variables bye bye to numbers

OpenStudy (kmullis6):

Ok so for Part C I'm just going to write (b, 3b + 1)?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

Yep!

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

that means : if she practices "b" hours, then she will win "3b+1" matches

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

whatever that means

OpenStudy (kmullis6):

Haha :P ok thanks!! Do you mind if I open another question and ask another?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

I'll try... tag me :)
