here is the story that goes with it "Organizing a Benefit Car Wash": Perhaps your organization or school group would like to earn some extra funds. Maybe you need to buy new team uniforms or band instruments, host a special program, or travel to a competition in another city. If your group lacks the funds it needs, you might want to consider a fund-raiser. One successful and enjoyable way for a school or civic group to earn money is to hold a car wash. If the adult advisors or sponsors of your group agree, the first steps are to get your school’s sanction, select a date, and find a location. Usually a local-area business near your school will cooperate if the school parking lot is unavailable or inconvenient. Ask the business owners if they would like to help your school by sponsoring your car wash. Try to find a business with a location near a busy intersection so that more drivers will see you. To avoid any problems, make sure you follow all of the steps below. Permission: The most important first step is to get permission from your school. If this is a school-sponsored event, school officials must be informed so they can ensure that you will be covered by insurance. They will also make sure there are no conflicts with any school policies or functions. Adults: You will need to have adult sponsors to chaperon the benefit. It is better to have more than one sponsor. You may need a backup in case the sponsor needs a break, is unable to attend, or can be present for only part of the day. The sponsor may be the best person to handle the money. It is also a good idea to have extra parents around to help. They can run errands or make phone calls if a volunteer forgets to show up or needs a ride. Parents can also wash and dry used towels at their homes. Equipment: Make sure that you have all the equipment you will need. This includes hoses, buckets, soap, sponges, a large supply of towels, and perhaps even a heavy-duty vacuum cleaner for doing car interiors. Be sure the site has a water outlet for your hose(s). If only one hose is available, have one person in charge of spraying the cars while other people do the vacuuming, sponging, wiping, and buffing. Also, make sure in advance that the school or business will donate the water so you aren’t surprised with a bill afterward! Organization and Staffing: Organize your group. Get enough members to staff the car wash for the entire time. It is best to overestimate. For example, plan on using four people per car and servicing two or three cars at a time. You will need someone to make the schedule and to assign the hours each volunteer will work. Make sure each person is allowed time for breaks. Some volunteers may not work as hard as others. Therefore, some people might have to fill in more than their scheduled time. Try to find three or four other people who will make sure that all goes well. Usually you know who the hard workers are. They are the ones who stay after a party to help the host clean up. Pricing: One other suggestion is to avoid setting a fixed price. Instead, ask for donations. Often motorists will offer more than you would have charged because they know the money is going to a worthwhile cause. Always thank the customers, no matter how much or how little they pay. You are representing your school. Wrap-up: Set a reasonable time limit. Make sure you begin and end the benefit at the time agreed upon. Make sure a few volunteers stay to clean up. Put all posters and other papers and disposable rags in trash containers. Spray down the lot. Roll up the hose. Thank the sponsors for their help. Send thank-you letters on the school’s stationery to everyone who participated. Finally, have fun and be safe! Expect to get wet at some time during the day, but to avoid accidents, discourage unnecessary or excessive horseplay. Remember that there will be lots of moving vehicles around.
