A vitamin is an organic compound required as a nutrient in tiny amounts by an organism. A compound is called a vitamin when it cannot be synthesized in sufficient quantities by an organism, and must be obtained from the diet Minerals refers to elements like calcium and iron, which are atoms themselves and not made up of constituent elements. However, when we ingest minerals in food or multivitamins, you are almost always ingesting a chemical compound that contains the mineral, not a "pure" element. For example, calcium carbonate contains calcium along with other elements oxygen and carbon, but your body breaks it down to use the calcium. Both vitamins and minerals are necessary for health and to maintain your body functioning well.
