Which of these is NOT a strategy you can use to find the meaning of an unknown word? A. Restatement context clues B. Parts of speech C. Contrast context clues D. Encyclopedia

OpenStudy (anonymous):

D right? Or C

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Uh i see someone typing but not their icon? And sorry for posting this in math, I usually get quicker answers

OpenStudy (calebrich):

It's D i believe

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

You are correct with D. Knowing the part of speech the word is being used in can definitely help with knowing which definition to look at. Context clues, restatement or contrast, can both help. Think of if I used the word gloomy, and you didn't know what that meant, I could put in contrast context clues such as: It was a gloomy, dull day. The clouds hovering above, the sun nowhere in sight. 'It looks like it's going to rain. Guess I won't be going outside today. Could you mostly figure out what gloomy means based on that? Probably

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

An encyclopedia is basically a huge nonfiction book about a particular branch of knowledge

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

Hopefully that all made sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah it was very helpful. Thank you
