Question about the Treaty of Paris: How did Emilio Aguinaldo violate the Treaty of Paris when he declared national independence in Malolos? I really need to know this, since I'm writing an argument about Roosevelt VS Aguinaldo. I will give a medal to the best answer.
Also, here's where I got my info from: "Shortly after the outbreak of the Spanish-American War in April 1898, Aguinaldo returned after U.S. Comdr. George Dewey had defeated the Spanish fleet in Manila Bay on May 1. When asked to let his troops be replaced by newly arrived U.S. forces, Aguinaldo withdrew to Malolos, where, on June 12, national independence was proclaimed. The first republic, with Aguinaldo as president, was inaugurated on Jan. 23, 1899. This act defied the Treaty of Paris, by which Spain had ceded the Philippines to the United States; as a result, the Philippine-American War broke out on Feb. 4, 1899. Though ill-equipped for guerrilla warfare in the tropics, U.S. troops eventually triumphed. Aguinaldo, driven into the mountains of Isabela province, was betrayed by Macabebe scouts from Pampanga and was captured on March 23, 1901. On April 1 he swore allegiance to the United States, although other Filipino generals fought on for another year."
I will be gone for awhile, so if anyone replies to this, I won't be back for an hour or so. Thanks in advance!
