What is the value of the expression when a = 6 and b = 4? *I wrote down some of the answers i think it is*

OpenStudy (anonymous):

These are my answer choices. 1. 52 2. 98 3. 66 4. 83.875

OpenStudy (kurayami95):

It should be 52

OpenStudy (kurayami95):

replace the numbers with the variables 14[6]-2(3[4]-4)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Given: \[\Large \color{red}{a} = \color{red}{6}\] \[\Large \color{blue}{b} = \color{blue}{4}\] ------------------------------- Replace every 'a' with 6. Replace every 'b' with 4. Then evaluate \[\Large 14a - 2(3b+4)\] \[\Large 14*\color{red}{a} - 2*(3*\color{blue}{b}+4)\] \[\Large 14*\color{red}{6} - 2*(3*\color{blue}{4}+4)\] I'll let you evaluate.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I did

OpenStudy (kurayami95):

and if you do PEMEDAS you should get 52

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Show your steps so we can see what you have

What was confusing me was the 14 x 6 - 2 next to the (3 x 4 + 4) I didn't know if I was supposed to multiply it because they were right next to each other. So I put those other answers because they were Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction, and Division. But now I know that it is multiplication and it's 52. Thank You :]

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

I'm not sure I follow correctly, but you use PEMDAS to evaluate the expression P = parenthesis E = exponents M = multiplication D = division A = addition S = subtraction the P for parenthesis comes first, so you do everything in the parenthesis first focusing on 3*4+4, we do the multiplication first since M comes before A. Then we add so, 3*4+4 = 12+4 = 16 this all means 14*6 - 2*(3*4+4) turns into 14*6 - 2*16

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

then you keep using PEMDAS to evaluate 14*6 - 2*16

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes and that equals 52

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you :) if i need help with more do you think you can help me?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

sure, just post if you have a question

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Should I post it on this question or on a different one and tag you in it?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

if it's a separate question, it is better to make a brand new post to avoid clutter and lag

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay I will do that. Thank you
