how does the social contract theory relate to the american revolution

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The social contract theory addresses the questions of the origin of society and the legitimacy of the authority of the state over the individual. This means you can question authority, this also expresses freedom of speech. It supports that people have an obligation to start a revolution if the state(government) abused their given power. This also means we can through out the government, we know this as impeachment.

John Locke's social contract theory was that people are endowed with the rights of Life, Liberty, and Property and it was the governments job to protect these natural rights, and the government's power should come from the consent of the governed. These ideas were utilized in the writing of the Declaration of Independence and in turn began the American Revolutionary War.
