OpenStudy (scienceteen8):

plz help 6th grade question i did this one but it is wrong so i have to redo this question

OpenStudy (scienceteen8):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm assuming they're asking for the combined fraction of video games

OpenStudy (scienceteen8):

the whole test was about finding the sum or difference and this is the only one wrong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If so, Jerome has 1/2 Mario has 2/5 You want to have them both have the same denominator (bottom #) Smallest common denominator is 10 Jerome has 5/10 Mario has 4/10 Together they have 9/10

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Or they could be talking about the missing 1/10 of the group's games....online homework is so frustrating T_T

OpenStudy (scienceteen8):

i know i have to have it right and send this question in to my teacher

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well...i'm pretty sure it's either 9/10 or 1/10. If you only have 1 try or get points taken off for wrong answer...i'd ask some more people to make sure what the problem is asking for exactly.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

I'm sorry you're nervous about not finishing this problem. However, you might be better off contributing ideas towards the solution instead of sharing your worries. One boy has in his possession half of the game group's videos and the other boy has two fifths. You are asked to combine these fractions; the result tells you what fraction of the group's video games have been borrowed by the two boys. We are not required to calculate what fraction of the games have NOT been borrowed. So, add (1/2) and (2/5). LCD is 10. Please show your work.

OpenStudy (scienceteen8):

yea i get as many chanses as i want but this questiong is only worth 2 points and i got 0 points bc it was wrong so next time i post something and someone comments i will defenetly ask if they are sure

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Please demo that you know how to combine the fractions 1/2 and 2/5. show your work.

OpenStudy (scienceteen8):

\[\frac{ 1 }{ 2 }+\frac{ 2 }{ 5 }=\frac{ 3 }{ 7 }? \]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You want both of them to have the same denominator before adding

OpenStudy (mathmale):

No. As someone has already told you (earlier), two fractions must have the same denominator before you can combine them. 1/2 and 2/5 do not have the same denom. Please find the LCD (Least Common Denominator) now. Go back and review what others have told you (above).

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Do not add the denominators!

OpenStudy (scienceteen8):

so jut add the numerators right

OpenStudy (scienceteen8):

3/10

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You have to change 1/2 to 5/10 2/5 to 4/10 before adding them together but do you understand, how i made that change?

OpenStudy (scienceteen8):

no i dont i understand the denomonators but not the numerators

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You have to change the bottom half of the fraction to a common denominator (something that they can both multiple into) before you start adding To change 1/2 to 5/10 I multiplied 1/2 (both top and bottom) by 5 (if you only do it to the top or bottom by itself, it won't be the same number any more)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If you change the denominator, you also have to change the numerator, so that it stays the same amount

OpenStudy (scienceteen8):

ok so i would multiply 5 and 1 first by 5 bu do i do the same with a an 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You have to do the same for 2/5 I changed 2/5 to 4/10 by multiplying both the top and the bottom by 2

OpenStudy (scienceteen8):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Once the denominators are the same 5/10 and 4/10, you can start adding (5/10) + (4/10) = 9/10 Only the numerator adds together, the denominator doesn't change

OpenStudy (scienceteen8):

ok thank you

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So...yeah. I believe the answer for the question is 9/10, but if that isn't right, try 1/10. In the end, even if you get the online problem wrong, you can always go and show your teacher that you know how to do the problem, since the wording of that question is a bit iffy in my opinion Goodluck

OpenStudy (scienceteen8):

yea im my online school all my teachers care about is that i participat in class and show how i did my work

OpenStudy (scienceteen8):

thanks for your help
