Shoot
OpenStudy (athecool):
Yeah what?
OpenStudy (wintersuntime):
I need help solving y=2x+10 and 5y=2-6x
OpenStudy (wintersuntime):
{y=2x+10
5y=2-6x
OpenStudy (sleepyjess):
Is this a system of equations?

Honestly I see thsee types of questions pop up all the time but I cannot rember how to solve them. I need to go back and research how to do it. So I am sorry I do not know quite how to do it and I do not want to give you the wrong answer or teach you something I cannot quite remember
OpenStudy (wintersuntime):
yEA
OpenStudy (sleepyjess):
Okay, do you know the substitution method?
OpenStudy (wintersuntime):
yea but I forgot
OpenStudy (sleepyjess):
That's fine :) I'll help ya out
We know what y equals, correct?

OpenStudy (wintersuntime):
yea
OpenStudy (sleepyjess):
So we can substitute the first equation, what y equals, into the second equation for y
OpenStudy (sleepyjess):
We take this y=2x+10 and put it into this 5y=2-6x, and end up with this 5(2x+10)=2-6x
Does that make sense so far?
OpenStudy (wintersuntime):
yea then we distribute
OpenStudy (sleepyjess):
Right! What do we have after distributing?

OpenStudy (wintersuntime):
I think we subtract ?
OpenStudy (sleepyjess):
What's the equation now after distributing?
OpenStudy (wintersuntime):
y=10+50=2-6x I'm not sure
OpenStudy (sleepyjess):
It would be 10x + 50 = 2 - 6x
OpenStudy (sleepyjess):
Now we need to get all constants (+ 50 and + 2) onto one side of the equation and all variables (+ 10x and - 6x) onto the other side

It's like terms
OpenStudy (wintersuntime):
How?
OpenStudy (sleepyjess):
I would probably add 6x to both sides and subtract 50 from both sides :)
OpenStudy (wintersuntime):
So I add 6x to 50 ?
OpenStudy (wintersuntime):
But isn't subtracting both sides??

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):
No, add 6x to both sides of the equals sign. 10x + 6x + 50 = 2 - 6x + 6x
On the right side of the equal sign, the - 6x and + 6x cancel each other out, so now we get
10x + 6x + 50 = 2
OpenStudy (sleepyjess):
Do you understand how I did that?
OpenStudy (wintersuntime):
oh yea
OpenStudy (wintersuntime):
Aren't they like terms?
OpenStudy (sleepyjess):
Okay, now can you do the same thing and cancel out that 50 on the left side?
Yes, 10x and 6x are like terms, so they can be combined to make 16x :)

OpenStudy (wintersuntime):
I think I have to subtract 50 and 2?
OpenStudy (sleepyjess):
Subtract 50 from both sides :)
OpenStudy (wintersuntime):
50 and 50 cancel out
OpenStudy (sleepyjess):
Yes, now 2-50 is?
OpenStudy (wintersuntime):
48

-48
OpenStudy (wintersuntime):
oh yea i forgot the sign
OpenStudy (sleepyjess):
Now we can solve for x
16x = -48
how do we cancel out the *16?
OpenStudy (wintersuntime):
divide 16
OpenStudy (sleepyjess):
Yes!
16x/16 = x
and -48/16 =?

-3
OpenStudy (sleepyjess):
Correct! Now, we can substitute that in for x in either equation, whichever you want to do :)
OpenStudy (sleepyjess):
Just so I don't have to keep scrolling up ;)
y=2x+10
5y=2-6x
OpenStudy (wintersuntime):
The top one y=2x+10
OpenStudy (sleepyjess):
Now put in -3 for x, and we can solve for y

OpenStudy (wintersuntime):
Don't we disturbute ?
OpenStudy (sleepyjess):
There's nothing to distribute now
OpenStudy (wintersuntime):
we plug in -3 to x
OpenStudy (sleepyjess):
Yes, so y = 2(-3) + 10
OpenStudy (sleepyjess):
now 2*-3?

-6
OpenStudy (sleepyjess):
Yes, and -6 + 10 = ?
OpenStudy (wintersuntime):
4
OpenStudy (wintersuntime):
so y =4 ?
OpenStudy (sleepyjess):
Yes! Now we can plug those values into the second equation just to make sure they're true for both.
5(4) = 2 - 6(-3)

Is it like 20=2-18?
OpenStudy (sleepyjess):
Well, what is -6*-3?
OpenStudy (wintersuntime):
postive 18
OpenStudy (sleepyjess):
Remember, negative * negative = positive
OpenStudy (sleepyjess):
Yes, so 2 + 18

oh yea I'm so dumb
OpenStudy (sleepyjess):
No you're not :)
OpenStudy (sleepyjess):
We all forget a step or 2 sometimes :)
OpenStudy (wintersuntime):
2+18 = 20
OpenStudy (sleepyjess):
Yep :3

OpenStudy (wintersuntime):
Then we divide
OpenStudy (sleepyjess):
No need to divide
OpenStudy (sleepyjess):
Our equation is true, 2+18=20
OpenStudy (wintersuntime):
oh
OpenStudy (sleepyjess):
20 = 20

So the solution is
x = -3
y = 4
OpenStudy (wintersuntime):
Thanks I need to do a similar another similar one I can try my best then can you check it please
OpenStudy (sleepyjess):
Sure, I'm going to leave for 10-15 mins, but if you're still here, I'd be happy to check it :)
