This passage is from a petition submitted in 1607 to Queen Elizabeth I of Great Britain. Why might the queen have rejected the petition and instead supported the formation of joint-stock companies? REASONS OR MOTIVES for the raising of a PUBLIC STOCK to be employed for the peopling and discovering of such countries as may be found most convenient for the supply of those defects which this Realm of England most requires. . . . Where colonies are founded for a public-[welfare], they may continue in better obedience and become more industrious than where private men are absolute backers of a voyage. Men of better behavior and quality will engage themselves in a public service, which carries more reputation with it, than a private, which is for the most part ignominious in the end, because it is presumed to aim at a profit and is subject to rivalry, fraud, and envy, and when it is at the greatest height of fortune can hardly be tolerated because of the jealousy of the state. —"Reasons for Raising a Fund to Settle America on the Value of Colonies to England," 1607 A. The petition suggests that private individuals would have greater incentives than public companies to earn profits. B. The petition suggests that public companies would require skilled laborers to immigrate to the colonies. C. The petition suggests that the state assume the financial risk of supporting New World colonies. D. The petition suggests that the potential profits earned by private companies would not be shared with the state.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I would go with A honestly, she condems men who use the venture and sales of the new world as "private" and it should be shared with the "state" whichmeans she wanted people to go against buying goods from the new world because most likely, the government would not be able to tax it because it was a private institution and not run by the state.

Based on the excerpt, how did trade between the European colonizers and indigenous peoples support the European goal of religious conversion? First, if it be unlawful: it must be so, either in respect of the law of God, or in regard to the laws of man. If in respect of Gods law, (considering our primary end is to plant religion, our secondary and subalternate ends are for the honor and profit of our nation) I demand a resolution of this plain question: whether it be not a determined truth, that the Gospel should be preached, to all the world . . . [in] one of these three ways. . . . The third belongs to us, who by way of merchandizing and trade, do buy of them the pearls of the earth, and sell to them the pearls of heaven, which action, if it be unlawful, it must proceed from one of these three grounds, either because we come to them, or trade with them, or tarry and dwell and possess part of their country against them. —Virginia Company, "A True Declaration of the Estate in Virginia," 1610 A. By trading with them, indigenous peoples would question the accuracy of their own religion. B. By trading with them, indigenous peoples would understand that the European religion was peaceful. C. By trading with them, indigenous peoples would learn the language necessary to understand the European religion. D. By trading with them, indigenous peoples would be exposed to those who preached the European religion.
