Maria is comparing the prices of two window cleaning companies. Company A charges $6 per window and an additional $12 as service charges. Company B charges $5 per window and an additional $15 as service charges. Part A: Write equations to represent Company A's and Company B's total charges for cleaning a certain number of windows. Define the variable used in the equations. (4 points) Part B: Which company would charge less for cleaning 8 windows? Justify your answer. (3 points) Part C: How much money is saved by using the services of Company B instead of Company A to clean 6 windows? (3 points)

zepdrix (zepdrix):

Let price be P, and number of windows cleaned be W. Let's examine company A's charges. `6 per window` and a flat charge of 12 as well.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay

zepdrix (zepdrix):

So the total price is 6 for each window, and then 12 more than that. \(\large\rm P=6W+12\) Understand how I came up with that equation? :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wow you are doing multiple questions at once? that is crazy

zepdrix (zepdrix):

We can switch these to x's and y's if you prefer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no its fine

zepdrix (zepdrix):

How bout company B? Can you come up with a similar equation using the same steps I did? Company B charges `$5 per `window and an `additional $15` as service charges.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

b=5w +15

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is that right?

zepdrix (zepdrix):

\[\large\rm P_A=6W+12\]\[\large\rm P_B=5W+15\] Ok looks great :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

close?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now what

zepdrix (zepdrix):

Ya if you feel more comfortable using A and B for the prices, do that. That might actually look better ^^\[\large\rm A=6W+12\]\[\large\rm B=5W+15\]For the first question, that takes care of the equations. Make sure you define your variables as well. A= total price company A charges to clean W windows. B= total price company B charges to clean W windows.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is that it for part A?

zepdrix (zepdrix):

Yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A = 6w+12 B = 5w + 15 that is all you have to do for part? or did i leave something out?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A

zepdrix (zepdrix):

Yes, you left something out. I explained it above. Define your variables. Define what A, B, and W mean.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A= total price company A charges to clean W windows. B= total price company B charges to clean W windows.

zepdrix (zepdrix):

Part B: Which company would charge less for cleaning 8 windows? This corresponds to W=8. Plug W=8 into both equations and compare. Which one is lower? Company A or B?\[\large\rm A=6\color{orangered}{\cdot8}+12\]\[\large\rm B=5\color{orangered}{\cdot8}+15\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

b

zepdrix (zepdrix):

A charges 60 dollars to clean 8 windows while B charges 55 dollars for the same work. Ok good. :)

zepdrix (zepdrix):

Part C: How much money is saved by using the services of Company B instead of Company A to clean 6 windows? Again, this corresponds to a specific value for W.

zepdrix (zepdrix):

It will be the same process as part B, but with one extra step at the end. So what do you get for company A and B when you plug in W=6?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A = 6.6 + 12 18.6 B = 5.6 + 15 20.6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2 dollars saved

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is that right?

zepdrix (zepdrix):

No, that dot is not supposed to be a decimal :) It's multiplication.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh crap sorry let me re do it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A = 6*6 + 12 48 B = 5*6 + 15 45 3 dollars saved

OpenStudy (anonymous):

did i do it right now?

zepdrix (zepdrix):

yay good job \c:/

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you so much for all the help. you are a champion!!!

zepdrix (zepdrix):

np \c:/

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@zepdrix can you do me a favor and check this to see if i put this in right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this is the total answer i put down. Part A: A= 6w+12 A =5w+15 A is the total price company A charges to clean windows B is the total price company b charges to clean windows w = windows Part B: Company B because company A charges 60 dollars to clean 8 windows and company B charges 55 dollars for the same thing. Part C: A = 6 multiplied by 6 + 12 48 B = 5 multiplied by 6 + 15 45 3 dollars saved

zepdrix (zepdrix):

ya that's probably fine :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay thank you again!!!!
