OpenStudy (abmon98):

Four identical spring each of spring constant k, are connected both in series and parallel as shown in V).

OpenStudy (abmon98):

OpenStudy (abmon98):

I know that the springs constant in series is given by 1/k=1/k+1/k=1/2k while in parallel its given by k=k+k=2k but how can i obtain k effective for all 4 springs

OpenStudy (irishboy123):

combine the 2 hat are in parallel first into one equivalent spring then you have three in series, so combine those 3

OpenStudy (abmon98):

i still dont get the logic behind why we are doing this?

OpenStudy (abmon98):

do we treat the 4 spring as if they are a single one?

OpenStudy (irishboy123):

you have a rule for combining springs in series, and another rule for combining springs in parallel. so use the latter rule first to combine those two parallel springs int an euivalent |dw:1449267869078:dw| the use the first rule to combine the 3 springs that in series
