Please help! In need of assistance! Convert the rectangular equation to a polar equation. Express r in terms of θ. 5x+y=9 r=?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Rectangular coordinate to Polar coordinate Conversion formulas: x=r cos theta, y=r sin theta. try substituting these for x and y in your original equation.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so would that be 5(r cos θ) + y(r cos θ) = 9 ?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Yes. Now solve your equation for r in terms of the angle, theta.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry, I meant sin for y not cos.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And my final result that I got was 9 / (5 cos θ + 1 sin θ).

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Glad you've realized that.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Best to type that as an equation / formula: Begin with "r="

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes. That's what I wrote as my final answer on my scrap paper while working out the problem. I just exempted the r = part when I was typing it on here.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you for your help BTW.

My pleasure!
