\[2x-y=6\] \[x+y=6\]
Notice how y has the coefficient -1 in the first equation and +1 in the second. Write one equation under the other and then combine them immediately. Since -y+y = 0, doing this will cause y to drop out. show your work, please.
Eliminate the 'y' you end with the 'x' and solve for 'x' and then plug in the answer you got for 'x' into one of equations (easiest one) and then solve for the 'y'
(2x-y=6) +(x+y=6) 3x=12 x=4 So, 4+y=6 y=2
