How many 20cm by 30cm rectangular tiles would you need to tile the outdoor area shown below? I will attach the photo of the shape given. I have worked out the shape to be 10.95m squared, but I don't understand how to figure out how many tiles will fit in that space! Please help!

Find the area of the object, and divide by the area of a 20x30 rectangle.
|dw:1449498512196:dw| We can cut it into 3 rectangles as shown
480 - 170 = 310 310 / 2 = 155 260 - 90 = 170
I worked it out by keeping it in decimal form and got 2.6 x 4.8 - (0.9 x 1.7)= 10.95 can you explain why it did work?

There are the measurements for the three rectangles, can you find the areas of all of them and add them together?
Hold on, let me check your work.
10.95 is correct.
Now find the area of a 20cm by 30cm rectangle. Or 0.2m by 0.3m
Yes I see from you using 260 instead of 2.6 and so on that its actually 109500 but can you explain why it didnt work by keeping the decimals?
The rectangle is 20 CENTIMETERS by 30 CENTIMETERS However, the figure is measured in meters, so I'm assuming you didn't convert?
And yes I get the right answer of 183 by doing that
I thought multiplying the answer by 100 was enough to convert it
182.5 to be exact
but I guess that brings it short a few zeros...I think I see now. Thank you very much for your help! :D
You don't just multiply by random numbers, you have to convert them correctly. 1m = 100cm 1cm = 0.01m
No problem, you did the work yourself! :)
Goodbye!
