OpenStudy (maddisongruby):

what is the y intercept of the graph y=-x^2-2x+5? i also have a few more

OpenStudy (mathmale):

To find the y-intercept of any function, if there is such an intercept, let x=0 and calculate y from the given function. Do that now, please.

OpenStudy (maddisongruby):

okay thank you so much! also i have another question, how would i change an equation in this form into vertex form? @mathmale

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Vertex form? You obtain this by "completing the square" on the right side of the equation. y=-x^2-2x+5

OpenStudy (maddisongruby):

completing the square? what does that mean?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

You could make the work easier by dividing the entire right side of the equation by -1. Write the -1 as a factor of -x^2-2x+5.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

If "completing the square" isn't familiar to you, then please find the vertex by letting x=-b/a, where a is the coeff. of the first term, and b is the coeff. of the 2nd term.

OpenStudy (maddisongruby):

okay thank you so much

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Using that x value, you can find the v-value at the vertex.
