If the ratio of the two rectangles remains 4 to 5, is it possible for the area of the smaller rectangle to be 8 square feet and the area of the larger rectangle to be 15 square feet? Explain why or why not.

@Directrix

OpenStudy (welshfella):

if the ratio of corresponding sides is 4:5 then the ratio of their areas is 4^2 : 5^2 - that is 16:25

OpenStudy (welshfella):

so if the area of smaller one is 8 we have 8/x = 16/25 where x is the area of the larger rectangle

OpenStudy (welshfella):

if you solve that for x you'll se that its not 15

OpenStudy (welshfella):

did you follow that process?
