The "cloud" refers to storing information out on the Internet for later retrieval. A cloud-based system is storing or running something outside of your own computer. If you look up each, you can get a sense of what they do. Google Drive https://www.google.com/drive/ First off, when you do a Google search for it, it comes back as "Google Drive - Cloud Storage and Backup...", so that makes it easy! Even if you didn't notice that, you can read a bit and see that they're storing files for you through the Internet, on their own servers. That's a cloud-based service. Dropbox www.dropbox.com Same as Google Drive -- they store information online that you can retrieve later. Skydrive https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OneDrive The name is a hint. Sky --> cloud (Though Microsoft has renamed it now, actually, to OneDrive. I like SkyDrive better, personally.) The logo is also a cloud. They're making it easy. Again, this is a way to store your files on Microsoft's servers, through the Internet, so it's a cloud-based service. That leaves Skype. http://www.skype.com/en/ If you read through the site, you'll see its all about live communication -- nothing is stored. You have to download and install Skype, so you're not running it through their cloud either. This is all about running something on your machine that lets you communicate online, but not store anything long-term. No cloud here. One more thing: Curiously, if you Google "skype cloud", you'll find that they ARE using a cloud-based system for their group chat, which is a relatively new development.
