The sum of three consecutive intergers is -27. What are the numbers? A. {-11, -13, -15} B. {-10, -9, -8} C. {-7,-9,-11} D. {-5,-9,-13}

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Any ideas?

OpenStudy (welshfella):

just add the 3 numbers in each choice and see which one gives -27.

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Recall that consecutive integers are numbers obtained by counting by ones from any number in the set of integers.

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Counting by ones with negative numbers would be like -10, -9, -8, -7,...

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

If you want a formula: Let n = the first number. Then n + 1 = second number and n+ 2 = third number.

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

But just look at the answer choices there is only ONE answer choice that satisfies the definition of "counting by ones." B. {-10, -9, -8} So that^ must be the answer. :-)

Sorry was AFK trying to figure out the problem in my notes, understand, I got D, but now looking at your formula I agree with you on B, thank you! Have an nice day!

Thanks for asking :D
