because the first thing you do is get the # next to the varriable out of the way and to do that you would divide on both sides. i think! and ok

You might be able to do it that way, but it is not the best way.
9-3q=14
I honestly don't know where to start if trying it that way, so let's just do it right.
9-3q=14
Subtract 9 from both sides
-3q=5
Divide by -3
q=5/-3
But you see how subtract 9 is the first step because it will give us one number or the right side, so that we may divide to separate the variable in the end.
