or 1 1/6
OpenStudy (anonymous):
We're not going to worry about the whole numbers just yet, Just the fractions.
So, they have a common denominator of 6.
6/2=3, so multiply the numerator by 3
1*3=3
So, the new fraction is
3/6
6/3=2, so multiply the numerator by 2
2*2=4
So, the new fraction is 4/6
Understand, or do you need more detail?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
oh ok i get it is that the answer
OpenStudy (anonymous):
No, that is just the equivalent fractions that will help us to get the answer.
So, our new problem is:\[-3\frac{ 3 }{ 6 }+4\frac{ 4 }{ 6 }\]Think you can solve it?
OpenStudy (md152727):
so -3+4=1 right?

\[-3\frac{ 3 }{ 6 }+4\frac{ 4 }{ 6 }\]Let's start with the whole numbers first. \[-3+4=1\]Next is the fractions. To add them, simply do so with the numerators.\[-3+4=1\]This means that our fractions add to:\[\frac{ 1 }{ 6 }\]Add our whole number to the fraction to get the answer:\[1+\frac{ 1 }{ 6 }=1\frac{ 1 }{ 6 }\]
OpenStudy (md152727):
@mc2 it is so easy!
OpenStudy (anonymous):
oh ok
OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):
-19/8 is correct, but 2*4=8
8+1=9
So, the second should be -9/8
OpenStudy (md152727):
simplified: \[-19+12/8\]
OpenStudy (md152727):
add -19+12
OpenStudy (md152727):
what do you get?
OpenStudy (md152727):
