Why was it so much cheaper to grow tobacco in the New World than in Europe? The warmer climate meant farmers could grow up to three times as much tobacco in a shorter amount of time. The colonists were willing to accept much lower pay since the British monopolies meant the cost of living was significantly lower in the colonies. The plantation economy, driven by slave labor, greatly reduced the cost of production. Since the New World was not yet settled, there was more room to plant more crops.
