Please Help 1. Which of the sets of ordered pairs represents a function? A = {(1, –2), (3, –5), (5, 2), (7, 5)} B = {(4, 2), (4, –2), (9, 3), (9, –3)}

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

A function is a relation where for every value of the independent variable (the first one in an ordered pair), there is a single value of the dependent variable. In other words, you could make a list of every value of the independent variable, and next to it put the value the dependent variable will have. If there is any value of the independent variable where you would have to write down several possibilities for the value of the dependent variable, it is not a function. Some examples: Function: {(1,2),(0,3),(2,3)} {(1,1),(2,1),(1,1)} Not a function: {(1,5),(1,7),(2,3)} The relation shown under "Not a function" is not a function because if we tried to make a list of the values of the dependent variable for each value of the independent variable, we would have to put both 5 and 7 in the row for 1.
