Please help will MEDAL and FAN Why did the republican party oppose slavery

OpenStudy (anonymous):

In the 19th century, the republicans and the democrats had the exact opposite views that they have today. technically the republicans during that time would be the current-day democrats, and vice versa. so why do republicans always claim it was their party who opposed slavery when the republican party at the time was literally the definition of the current-day democratic party. it was the democratic ideas that opposed slavery, and the republican ideas that were for it. This just always irritates me! Also, the people against slavery at the time were the educated north, which is now MOSTLY democrats, and the south back then was for slavery, which is now MOSTLY republicans

thank you

Southern Democratic Party leaders, in 1860, wanted to keep Blacks on their Plantations. National Democratic Party leaders, in 2011, want to keep Blacks on Uncle Sam's Plantation. Andrew Jackson was the first President from what has become the modern Democratic Party, not Lincoln. Andrew Jackson believed in using the power of government to force Native Americans onto Reservations just as the modern Democratic Party believes in using the power of government to force all of us onto the Reservation. Same song, second verse. Prior to 1856, the main opposition party to the Democrats was the Whig Party. As the Whig Party disintegrated, the defections were basically according to sectional and political leanings. Many in the north defected to the new Republican Party, as did Lincoln, who held the idea of "nation" as prime, through force if necessary. Others, like in the South, rejected the notion of nation in favor of voluntary confederation (not to be confused with the Confederacy). They still believed in Union as long as it was a voluntary one. Many have the opinion that modern Democratic Party policies have driven Southern "democrats" into the Republican fold. However the truth is Southerners having lived under the rule of Southern Democrats since Reconstruction ended, very similar to those of 1860, seized the opportunity to vote against national democrats who for so long turned a blind eye to what was happening in the South because they could count on those racist democratic state leaders to deliver the "Electoral Vote" in Presidential elections. Most people in the South, until recently, still voted for new Southern democrats in local and state elections. The Southern State that is my home just elected a conservative Republican majority to both the State Senate and the State House, the first Republican majority in 140 years (since Reconstruction). My opinion is it's the first ever conservative Republican majority as that majority elected 140 years ago was elected under rules imposed by "Radical Republicans" from D.C., the liberals of the day. The current Governor is a Democrat. From 1877 until 1973, the state had one Republican governor with only 2 since 1973. Forgive us if we reject the National Democratic Party for helping to keep us under racist state governance for so long. The enforcement arm of the Southern Democratic Party, the KKK, was responsible for suppressing the opposition to Party rule, especially if the opposition came from white Southerners. Contrary to popular opinion, we don't pine for those days.
