OpenStudy (sagewilson):

(image below) To find the value of y in this proportion you must divide 54 by: 2 3 4 6

OpenStudy (sagewilson):

OpenStudy (sagewilson):

I've already come up with this 108 (2*6*9) = 3 (x*y) but I am noy sure if this is correct.

OpenStudy (sagewilson):

*not

OpenStudy (owlcoffee):

In the case of having a three-proportion you can choose any pair you so desire in order to find any value you like. For example: \[\frac{ a }{ b }=\frac{ h }{ k }=\frac{ x }{ y }\] I can use the transitive axiom of mathematics to conclude the following: \[\frac{ x }{ y }=\frac{ a }{ b }\] \[\frac{ h }{ k }=\frac{ a }{ b }\] Just because between those three proportions were a "=" sign I can choose any pair i conveniently like and make things simpler.

OpenStudy (sagewilson):

okay so I can do 2/3 = 9/y, no that wouldn't add up..

OpenStudy (owlcoffee):

Try solving for "y" there.

OpenStudy (sagewilson):

well 3 * 9 is 27 if I were to divide by 2 it would leave me with 13.5. that is not one of the answer choices though.

OpenStudy (owlcoffee):

hint: 9/y is the simplified form of the given info.

OpenStudy (owlcoffee):

This means that you have to multiply both numerator and denominator by a number in such way that the numerator becomes 54.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is this problem solved? if not I can help. u like to?

OpenStudy (sagewilson):

Yeah the problem has been solved, I got the answer wrong but I've already submitted it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

any other question in any other problem? I'm just too free that i've got so bored.
