Which relations are functions and which are not functions? Column A Column B 1.{(3, 2), (6, 4), (9, 6),(12, 8)} 2.{(2, 3), (2, 5), (3, 6), 9, 4)} 3.{(4, 2), (6, 3), (4, 8),(6, 6)} 4.{(3, 4), (5, 2), (6, 8), (6, 4)} A.function B.not a function

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

in this form, if you have no repeated x values (with different y values), then it is a function.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so all of them are function @zzr0ck3r

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

Example, 2 is not a function because we have the ordered pairs (2,3) and (2,5) Since we have x values repeating with different y values it is NOT a function.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im lost i dont understand

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

do you see that we have the ordered pairs (2,3) and (2,5) in #2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@dan815

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

do you see that we have the ordered pairs (2,3) and (2,5) in #2?

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

this is really easy, if you just answer my questions...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

ok so we have an x value 2 that belongs to two y values 3 and 5.

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

so it is not a function

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

so you just need to make sure you don't have repeated x values

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1.A 2.B 3.B 4.A

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

look at the last one again

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4.B 3.A

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

does 1 have any repeated x values?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

they all do except #1

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

so the only one that is a function is 1

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

repeated x values mean NOT a function

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes only number 1

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

You can have repeated x values but the y values must be the same \(\{(2,3),(2,3),(4,5)\}\) is a function

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

but unless they are trying to trick you they wont give you examples like that.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay i understand thank u

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

one more thing. you are allowed to have repeated y values \(\{(2,3),(4,3),(5,5)\}\) is a function

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

ok no problem.
