OpenStudy (greatlife44):

this question is kind of biology related

OpenStudy (greatlife44):

I find that just memorizing terms doesn't really help at all. I used to do it a-lot but i find practicing/integrating/applying the info helps but I guess there aren't enough scenarios /opportunities to do so especially when you're pressed for time. especially for classes where you need to know a-lot of information and learn it quickly but how do you really make this information stick, what are some study methods that work for you?

OpenStudy (greatlife44):

especially for biology, there's a-lot of terms to learn and I feel that In a fast paced course, there's just not enough time to learn it. I think methods where you have to engage/practice the information are good like integrating the info and applying it to new situations but there's just not enough time for that and most problems I find are either too genera/straightforward.

OpenStudy (somy):

understand and correlate new information with past info, forming relation between past memory and new memory

OpenStudy (somy):

im a med student and thats what i do anything i get to learn, that is new i create new connections between what i have learn before or i can just somehow relate it to life around me

OpenStudy (somy):

but the most important part is to understand what you are trying to learn once u do, then everything will make sense, then practicing info by using some mcqs from internet can also help

OpenStudy (greatlife44):

I guess the point of my rant is that, I was so used memorizing stuff but now if I can't make sense of the information and its purpose, I just don't remember it. I used to spend hours re-reading my notes and highlighting coming back and knowing very little. so you would say making connections between the information is the most important. Yeah, I'm a novice at this I'm very bad at relating the concepts to things around me I feel I should do it more.

OpenStudy (greatlife44):

Like for me I found discussing concepts and explaining them to be very helpful even more so then reading a textbook.

OpenStudy (greatlife44):

than**

OpenStudy (somy):

i dont actually use that method a lot im more into relating to my past memories or going deeper into topic e.g. if i am to learn some system functioning, and i dont seem to get it too well, i just go around the opposite way, which means i see what will happen if the system doesnt work then everything makes sense and i successfully connected two info + since im med, i search for med conditions related to the system and get even more info to correlate that one system to

OpenStudy (greatlife44):

Thing is though even for discussing topics, it does take time and there's not always someone available to discuss them with. But how do you deal with that level of information without burning out?

OpenStudy (greatlife44):

I should have said amount** not level

OpenStudy (somy):

the number one thing is make it easy for yourself draw it out, make circuits, our brain likes info in this way more

OpenStudy (somy):

i try not to overstudy i give myself breaks but more importantly if i read something, i read it loud so that i can hear myself i stop if info doesnt make sense and discuss it with myself, you dont need someone to discuss stuff with, just let your brain take over and it will start correlating on its one without u noticing

OpenStudy (greatlife44):

I have never tried that before

OpenStudy (somy):

try it then you might not realize but our brain does correlation of all info it gets, without you knowing, but sometimes u need specific correlations and for that you gotta train yourself to focus on particular info

OpenStudy (greatlife44):

Like what I used to do was and It just doesn't work at all. 1. Read the textbook 2. Go to lecture 3. re read textbook 4. Highlight

OpenStudy (somy):

and form connections ofc

OpenStudy (somy):

i hate reading text books, im a 3D learner so i picture and imagine the info more than read it, i read it once only, and next all i do is try to understand the system, visualize it, and for that sometimes youtube helps if book is unclear again there are a lot of lectures on youtube that are more visual and more easy to understand

OpenStudy (somy):

what sort of biology are you learning?

OpenStudy (greatlife44):

Finished first semester bio going to take second semester next year

OpenStudy (somy):

yeah but what is it about

OpenStudy (somy):

mine is more in depth human part so i might help you out with that part

OpenStudy (somy):

might be able to*

OpenStudy (greatlife44):

we learned about parts of the cell, Translation, Transcription, Meiosis stuff like that.

OpenStudy (somy):

yeah i can deal with those well let me know if you struggle somewhere

OpenStudy (somy):

ill try to get you to understand :)

OpenStudy (greatlife44):

Thank you so much. I never tried that method before. but For me I find highlighting and reading textbooks to some degree to be useless and even re-reading the stuff too. I guess I don't really make enough connections between the material, like I'll try to understand a concept but I wont try to relate it with what I learned before. Also I feel alot of books just don't get to the point. I'm definitely going to try more visual learning like youtube/etc.

OpenStudy (somy):

you are welcome, i hope it helps you :D let me know if you struggle :)
