Esther wants to know if the number of words on a page in her language arts book is generally more than the number of words on a page in her social studies book. She takes a random sample of 25 pages in each book and then calculates the mean, median, and mean absolute deviation for the 25 samples of each book. (picture below) She claims that because the mean number of words on each page of the language arts book is greater than the mean number of words on each page of the social studies book, the language arts book has more words per page. Based on the data, is this a valid inference?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, because there is a lot of variability in the language arts book data No, because there is a lot of variability in the language arts book data Yes, because the mean is larger in the language arts book No, because the mean is larger in the social studies book

Is there a picture? c:

yea the actual picture wouldn't load so i had to draw it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know its not A ..

OpenStudy (camerondoherty):

I'm understanding the question as this: Based on the data given, is Esther's claim valid? Her claim is that EACH page on the language arts book has more words than EACH page in the Social Studies book. If the mean, or average, is significantly larger than the mean in the Social Studies book, then it would make sense that the Language arts book has more wpp (words per page) The median does raise a few questions, however... I'm overall just confused by this question, and I don't want to give you a wrong answer, sorry cx It surely cannot be D, because the mean of the Social Studies book is not larger than the Language arts book... If the Mean, or average, is greater, than it really should have more wpp (words per page) I'd say it was C I can't really be sure though Sorry cx

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what about B then cuz u think d is wrong, i guessed on a and got it wrong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but i think i might have to go with c it makes more sense to me

OpenStudy (camerondoherty):

Well, B is just saying that the data takes large swings and changes a lot, so it couldn't be valid. I'm pretty confused by the question itself, so I couldnt say which

OpenStudy (camerondoherty):

Either B or C, if we know its not A or D

OpenStudy (camerondoherty):

I'm sorry :c

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Alright i think its c i'll tel you if its wrong though

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont want to make u feel bad but i got it wrong
