Which statement best explains why the Roman Republic ended in civil wars? Nothing had been done to ease the tensions between the patricians and poor plebeians. Tiberius Gracchus had a bitter personal feud with the leading senator, Publius Nasica. A lack of land-holding citizens caused generals to recruit landless poor people, whose loyalty was to the generals that paid and rewarded them. The poorer citizens were upset at the obvious unfairness of voting in the assembly of the centuries.

The Roman Republic ended in civil wars because, basically, the Roman Empire had conquered so many peoples that they could only rule by force. Eventually, the Roman Empire's authority was spread so thin, the peoples from the region now known as the United Kingdom (England) to Spain to Turkey to Egypt were able to begin rebellions within the Roman Empire. Roman authorities simply could not control everyone and everything after a while; the various factions among the citizenry won - resulting in their freedom, especially the freedom to end Roman rule.
