How did Gothic cathedrals differ from Romanesque cathedrals? Gothic cathedrals were built in the cold North in Germany, so they needed thicker walls and less windows. Romanesque cathedrals were old Roman buildings which had been renovated in the Middle Ages. Gothic cathedrals were smaller, shorter, and could be built more quickly. Gothic cathedrals had thinner walls and the external support of flying buttresses.
