Algebra question below, will medal. Help please.

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

Do you know the formula for point-slope equation of a line?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@JoannaBlackwelder y-y1 = m(x - x1) right?

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

Right! So, what are y1, m, and x1?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y1 = 2, x1 = 5, m =3

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

Sweet. So, when you plug those numbers in the formula, what do you get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y - 2 = 3(2 - X)

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

Close, but not quite. The y1 and m are plugged correctly, but you reversed the order of the x and x1 (also x1 is 5)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh, derp. I typed 2 instead of 5 haha. Ok so, it would be. y-2 = 3 (x - 5)

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

No worries. Great job!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@JoannaBlackwelder And for the second question that would make the answer 'C' correct?

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

You got it!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Awesome, I think I got the hang of point-slope now haha. Seriously, thank you so much!

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

Sweet. You are very welcome!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Write y=(-5/8)x+3 in standard form using integers. @JoannaBlackwelder . This one confuses the hell out of me haha

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

Ok, let's see. Do you know what standard form is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ax + By = C

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

Cool, so can you get the terms on the correct sides first?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Uh.... Maybe. y-3 = (-5/8)x

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

Close but not quite. Standard form has the x and y terms on the same side and the constant on the other side.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hm, could you help me get them on the correct side?

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

I think you can do it. You just need to move the x term over to the left side instead of the constant term. Try once more. :-)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Would I be dividing x by -5/8?

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

No, the (-5/8)x is one term. We can move it to the other side by adding (5/8)x on both sides (since it is currently negative).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ooooh. I get it now, so then it would end up being y +5/8x = 3

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

Yay, great! That is the first step. Now we need to clear the fraction. Any ideas on that step?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

None haha

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

Ok, no worries. The way to clear a fraction is to multiply the entire equation by the denominator. Try that and see what you get.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

8y+ 5x = 24

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

Beautiful! Now we just need to reorder so that the terms are in the same order as the formula.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5x + 8y = 24

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

:-)
